In our school, on Thursday 16/05/2024, the eTwinning program “The Experiment of Eratosthenes” was presented with the aim of communicating its value to all members of the school community. At the end of the event, certificates were awarded to the students of the 10th grade (A Lyceum) who participated and successfully completed this effort. We hope that this good practice will continue in the next school year with new programs.

Αs we all know, education is more than mere knowledge transmission. It is a journey of discovery, collaboration, and inspiration. With this philosophy in mind, we developed the European eTwinning program “The Experiment of Eratosthenes,” connecting schools from various countries across Europe.

Our program brings together students and teachers from Portugal, Turkey, North Macedonia, Romania, Spain, Poland and Greece. Within a framework of continuous multicultural exchange, we not only discovered the differences and similarities among our countries but also the cohesive bonds that can be developed through education and science.

Centered on the experiment of Eratosthenes, our students learned beyond theory, the essence of interaction. By applying what they learned, they measured the radius of the Earth using ancient and modern methods, highlighting the importance of experiments in the educational process. Through this experience, they learned to think critically, work collaboratively, and develop their interest in the sciences.

A fundamental principle throughout the program implementation was that its aim was not merely the exchange of knowledge. Instead, it was an opportunity for students to explore the world around them with the help of science and technology. Through inquiry-based and experiential learning, applying the principles of geometry and trigonometry, they became familiar with topics concerning the coordinates of a place and the dimensions of the Earth. Additionally, they developed skills in using collaborative online tools, improved their knowledge of the English language, and practiced using Web2 collaborative tools. For these and other reasons, we appreciate that through such programs, science becomes more accessible and understandable.

Moreover, following this experience, our student achieved higher academic performance. Now, as active and interactive citizens of the world, they are able to understand the importance of collaboration, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Therefore, the “Experiment of Eratosthenes” program was not just an educational project but an experience, a journey, and a source of inspiration for our students and educators alike.

Warm Congratulations to the students who participated: Vlachos D., Gemenetzi Aikaterini, Gemenetzi Anastasia, Gougousis Georgios, Ourmani Antigoni-Maria, Papadaki Asimina, Rizou Eleftheria, Tagaloglou Leonidas, Tzika Artemis, Topalidou Paraskevi, Tourounoglou Evaggelia-Glykeria, Chatzimichail Anastasia and Psilos Charalambos.
