Within the framework of the Erasmus + KA229 programme “Acting now for the future”, during the period 2-6 May 2022, our school, the 7th High School of Thessaloniki, visited Tallinn, Estonia. Specifically, accompanied by the school’s teachers, Katerina Efraimidou and Theodore Hambidis, the group of five students represented our school as one of the partners of the project along with similar delegations from Crete, Lithuania, Portugal and the Czech Republic. The theme focused on the issue of food waste and its proper management.
Thanks to the tradition of previous mobilities, students and teachers alike had the opportunity to interact in a common framework of perception that is gradually consolidated and based on the principles of respect for the environment. In practice, and in terms of the programme’s actions in this mobility, the balance between theoretical approaches and experiential actions, with the latter predominating, gave young Europeans the opportunity to feel the pulse of the common perspective, the militancy and the importance of the issues involved in this particular theme, the rational management of food by human beings. In this respect, the waste of food, seen in the light of laboratory practices at the Biotechnology and Food Research Organization and the corresponding Food Laboratory of TalTech, as well as visits to local authorities responsible for the issue of energy resource management were harmoniously and effectively combined with experiential activities such as a visit to the Open Air Museum of the Rocca al Mare area or the famous marsh of the Viru area.
At the same time, the cultural tradition, the admirable architecture and the culture of hospitality of the charming Tallinn became the reasons for the students and teachers of our school to get to know a community so different from the Greek one but so similar in terms of concerns about the environment and the prospect of its protection. Of course, it was the combination of the activities with the cultural programme that enabled everyone to feel satisfied with the travel experience in Estonia. The special cuisine, sightseeing and the strengthening of our relationships with our partners undoubtedly gave us a sense of familiarity and community. An important moment of the visit was also the introduction of our delegation to the city of Helsinki as part of our cultural tour of the region. In any case, the contribution of the host country, Estonia, to the whole organisation of the mobility was satisfactory, as were the facilities provided by the Metropol Hotel.
Empathy, collectivity, a sense of belonging, faith and hope in the existence of a future based on the culture of cooperation were the main conclusion of all the activities of the 3rd mobility of our school, the 7th High School of Thessaloniki, in Tallinn, Estonia. For this reason, moreover, our participation in this Erasmus + KA229 programme can be nothing less than an occasion for the following: on the o
ne hand, for the commitment to continue the long tradition of our school in projects aimed at extroversion, connection with the local community and the progress of our students, and on the other hand, for the commitment of our educational community’s target-orientation to the claim of a clean and healthy environment. After all, our home, Europe, should be just that: a clean, tolerant, peaceful community for the progress of our young people, our children.
